About the band:
The Surf Shadows is a Ballarat-based band that has played around Western Victoria for the past decade or so. We love the old surf instrumentals and blend these with some Shadows, hence the name! We do some vocals to complement the instrumentals, but you won’t hear any Beach Boys type surf!
Recordings:
Recently we have recorded some original instrumentals written by lead guitarist Bruce Schmidt. Both Bruce and bass player, Kevin Zibell, grew up in Mildura, where the Murray river surf was pretty wild at Apex Park, especially when a paddle steamer passed! Bruce and Kev are joined by John Ducardus (guitar) and Dave Dahlenburg (drums) to complete the band.
Trouble at the Wharf (B. Schmidt)—Mildura wharf was a dangerous spot–you could easily get your fishing line tangled when the paddle cruisers came in or get bombed from someone while having a dip!
Vostock Rumble (B. Schmidt)—Bruce has this space fantasy and I guess he might have been inspired by sputniks etc?
Murray Moon (B. Schmidt)—the moon over the river was always a great sight, but there was also a Mildura dance venue that went by this name, remarkable because the “EasyBeats” were in residence there for a few days just before they became really big!
San Mateo/Pipeline (San Mateo by B. Schmidt)—we used another Bruce tune to introduce the Chantays surf classic
